Router/Firewall/Proxy
Considerations |
To know your type of IP address open
the ‘Global Options’ dialog, and click ‘Test
Connectivity’. 1AVStreamer will tell you what kind of IP address and connection
type you have.
If your PC connects to the internet
through a router/firewall/proxy, then you will need to configure port forwarding on your router so that
Internet users will be able to connect to your broadcast. First you need to
understand what port forwarding is: What is port forwarding?
Now that you know what port
forwarding is, let us move on to the router. Your router should be some kind of
box that your computer is connected to. The box might have a cable TV or phone
line coming out of it. It probably has serveral flashing lights on the front of
it. The cable that will run from your computer to this box is called a network cable.
The ends of this cable look like the ends of a large phone cable. When you find
this box, it will probably have a maker and model number on it. If you can't
find the make and model number check the stickers on the bottom of the router.
Write this information down. We will use it later. If you are inside a company
and your PC connects to the Internet using the company firewall then you will
have to request the port forwarding
to your company’s network administrator.
Now what ports do you need to forward?
When you open the ‘Broadcast Settings’
dialog you see a ‘Port to broadcast’ control
where you select which port you want your broadcast to be, and this is the
exact same port you have to set up port
forwarding on. The same works for the website published by 1AVStreamer web server. Don’t forget to configure port
forwarding for both TCP and UDP
protocols. You will see further explanations as we go.
Now that you know what
port you need to forward and what router model you have then you are ready to
do it. Go to:
http://portforward.com/routers.htm
Find the exact
router you use and click on it. Then you wil be asked to select a program, so
select ‘1st SMTP Server’, the first option. All other options will also
explain.
You will be taken
to a page that will explain to you how to set the port forwarding on your router. You will see that it is quite a
simple process.
IMPORTANT: Don’t forget that you have to change the
port used in the example by the port you actually need. For example, the
default port for 1AVStreamer to broadcast is 8070.
